Courses for Drivers Guilty of Traffic Violations

THE HAGUE, Tuesday - The cabinet is introducing two new 'educational measures' for drunk drivers or those found guilty of dangerous behaviour in traffic. "An educational measure is a course at the expense of the driver in which they are shown the consequences of his behaviour."

The educational measure will be imposed under administrative law, according to the cabinet. Drivers showing violent behaviour do not come under the scheme; they are prosecuted under criminal law.

Someone caught with a low alcohol content and who is a novice driver can receive a 'mild educational measure' under the proposal. Additionally, there will be a separate course for drivers who "deliberately break traffic rules, endangering the drivers themselves and other traffic participants."

Examples of this are "repeated tailgating, overtaking on the right, but also seriously exceeding the permitted speed limit." If drivers participate "insufficiently or not at all" in the course, their licences may be cancelled.

Mopeds will be brought under the scheme at a later stage. The measures are expected to come into effect after the summer.
