Poll: Govt Should Complain to Jordan on Wilders Prosecution

THE HAGUE, 08/07/08 - The Dutch consider their government should rap Jordan's knuckles for the prosecution of Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders. A large majority considers his anti-Islam film Fitna acceptable, according to pollster Maurice de Hond.

De Hond asked: 'The OM (Public Prosecutor) has decided not to prosecute Wilders for the film Fitna. Do you agree with this decision?' To this, 78 percent answered yes, 16 percent no and 6 percent had no opinion. Only among leftwing Green (GroenLinks) voters did a majority consider Wilders should have been prosecuted.

De Hond also asked: "Jordan did decide to prosecute Wilders for Fitna. Do you think the country has the right to do this?" To this, 33 percent answered yes, 59 percent no and 8 percent had no opinion. Once again, only a GroenLinks majority thought Wilders should be prosecuted by Jordan.

"Do you think Minister Verhagen must indicate to Jordan that the Dutch government does not consider it acceptable for Wilders to be prosecuted?" De Hond asked finally. To this, 68 percent answered yes, 25 percent no and 6 percent had no opinion. Here, too, GroenLinks voters were the exception.
