Human Rights Tulip to Continue to Exist

THE HAGUE, 02/10/13 - The Human Rights Tulip will continue to exist, but will be adapted. Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans is thereby acceding to the wishes of the Lower House.

The state prize honours human rights activists abroad. The minister wanted to replace it by a Human Rights Innovation Award, but that displeased a majority of the House.

Timmermans has now promised to keep the name. Defenders of human rights will also remain central for the annual prize, which is five years old.

Timmermans does however want innovation for the prize. It should achieve greater awareness, among other means by attracting the social media. The House was satisfied with this. In a year’s time, there will be a review of whether the innovation has worked.
