Cabinet Members to Maintain Silence on Zorreguieta

THE HAGUE, 06/11/00 - Prime Minister Wim Kok has instructed the members of the Cabinet to make no statements about the father of Maxima Zorreguieta. The premier claimed that there was no question yet of marriage plans between Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Maxima.

A discussion has been raging for some time about whether Zorreguieta senior should be allowed to attend a possible wedding between his daughter and the Dutch heir to the throne. Maxima's father was part of the regime that violated human rights in Argentina.

Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm said in a television program last week that Zorreguieta was no good, because he was a minister in a government that was no good. Centre-left (D66) parliamentary leader Thom de Graaf also made negative remarks about Zorreguieta senior.
