THE HAGUE, 04/04/01 - The Lower House will debate tomorrow with Prime Minister Wim Kok on the engagement of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Maxima Zorreguieta. The session will focus on the way Kok prepared for the announcement of the engagement. The debate also includes the research carried out by Professor M. Baud and the visits of Minister of State Max van der Stoel to Maxima's father Jorge Zorreguieta. Parliament does not yet have to give its approval to the planned marriage; the government must first submit an authorization bill to the two Houses. However, it was clear on Friday after the announcement of the engagement by Queen Beatrix and the explanatory statement made by Kok that there would be few votes against the marriage. All the parliamentary parties were extremely satisfied with the way Kok dealt with the engagement and the 'sensitivities' in connection with Jorge Zorreguieta's past. |
