Robin Utrecht Wins Silver Camera with Fortuyn Photo

ROTTERDAM, 28/01/03 - Photographer Robin Utrecht, 28, has won the Silver Camera 2002, the prize for the best news photo of the year. The winning photo shows Pim Fortuyn after being gunned down in Hilversum's Mediapark car-park.

Utrecht, a staff photographer with the ANP news agency, not only won the best news photo of the year prize, but also came first in the sports, political news and portraits categories. Additionally, he was selected as photo-journalist of the year. Never before has a photographer won in so many categories.

Utrecht's photo of Fortuyn appeared on the front pages of virtually all newspapers on 7 May, the day after the murder. The jury described it yesterday as "shocking without being exceptionally sensational. " Last week, Utrecht also won the Prix Bendrihem, a prestigious award for the most impressive photo of a European politician.
