Memorial Plaque for Pim Fortuyn

HILVERSUM, 15/03/03 - The Media Park in Hilversum is setting up a memorial tablet for Pim Fortuyn. The bronze plaque will be mounted within a few weeks in the park's car park, where a lone gunman shot the politician in the head on 6 May last year.

Director M. Jonkhart of the Netherlands broadcasting organization NOB, which owns the Media Park, stated on Friday that by setting up a simple tablet at the place of the murder, the NOB wished to record "the fact that one of the few political murders in Dutch history took place there. " The plaque will read, 'Pim Fortuyn, 6 May 2002'.

The brothers of the assassinated politician announced on Friday that they would be launching a website in April listing activities to mark the anniversary of Fortuyn's death. The brothers will not organize any events themselves, but expect many initiatives from others. A foundation hopes to unveil a statue of the politician on 6 May in his home city of Rotterdam.

The suspected murderer, Volkert van der G., was permitted to leave the Pieter Baan Centre (PBC) on Friday. The Justice Ministry's behavioral research center has completed its study of the 33-year-old animal rights activist. The man, who has confessed to the murder, has been returned to Amsterdam prison. His trial will start on 27 March.
