AMSTERDAM, 11/03/03 - Full coverage of the proceedings against Volkert van der G. will not be shown on television. The district court in Amsterdam decided yesterday that only parts can be transmitted, and the suspect may not be shown. The Public Prosecutor (OM) will open the case on 27 March with the indictment against the 33-year-old suspect of the murder of politician Pim Fortuyn, after which the court will give a summary overview of the facts. This initial phase of the proceedings will be broadcast, as will the closing arguments of the OM and the defence on 1 April. The last words of the suspect on 1 April may however not be filmed, nor the intervening session on 31 March, when the behavioral assessment of the Pieter Baan Centre (PBC) will be presented. It is not yet known whether the court will hear witnesses or expert witnesses during the session. The pictures recorded will be released with half an hour's delay, to allow for cutting out possible privacy-sensitive parts, according to a spokeswoman from the court. Due to the limited number of seats in the top security court in Amsterdam Osdorp, the entire session will be transmitted live for journalists to a courtroom on the Parnassusweg. Filming, taking photographs and making sound recording is forbidden at both locations. More remarkably, artists are also not welcome to sketch the suspect. |
