Fortuyn List Wants to Scrap State Pensions for Millionaires

THE HAGUE, 08/01/03 - The Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) party wants to save "Billions" by scrapping the state old-age pension (AOW) for wealthy over-65 year olds, party leader Mat Herben announced. The plan is not in the election program he launched Monday evening.

The election manifesto includes a series of economies, whereby a total of 19 billion euros would be reshuffled. For example, the budget for development aid, based on 0.8 percent of GDP, would be frozen until it reached the level which is currently 0.7 percent. The LPF also no longer wants to give the money to the countries themselves, but to aid organizations, to avoid abuses. "There is practically no country in Africa which is not atrociously corrupt," Herben declared.

Additionally, the program elaborates on the positions of the party's assassinated leader Pim Fortuyn. The LPF wants to slash the number of policy-making officials by 30 percent. Herben also announced he wanted to give a medal to citizens who intervene in a street fight.
